I am Shuichi Matsuda, professor of Kyoto University. I have
succeeded Dr. Kengo Yamamoto as president of the Japanese
Society for Replacement Arthroplasty (JSRA). I am humbled to
serve as president of this historic society.
The JSRA was founded in 1971 as a society for the study of
prosthetic joints, and has grown into a large organization
with more than 3,800 full members today. Looking at the
clinical outcomes of replacement arthroplasty, thanks to the
efforts of many of our predecessors, we have seen major
improvements in the durability of prosthetic joints, and the
number of surgeries in Japan is rising year after year. We
have not solved all challenges related to arthroplasty,
however, and from patients’ point of view, surgeries that are
less invasive, deliver greater durability, and impose fewer
limitations on post-surgery activities are needed. We in the
JSRA must deploy our scientific abilities to help solve a
number of challenges through the advancement of knowledge.
